Pregnant Dominican girl dies as abortion ban delays leukemia treatment:

This is an extremely controversial case—do we choose the mother to live or the unborn baby? In this case, both have died due to a failure to act and now we are left with a grieving mother, a dead teen, and a dead, unborn child.

Seeing that this girl was simply being treated as an incubator—an object; I believe she had a right to live and receive the treatment that could’ve saved her life. Even if another would’ve rejected the treatment, she at least deserved the choice to receive it.

Breastfeeding Dad Raises New Questions About Motherhood:

So, they criticize all of the moms who don’t do it, BUT they want to stop those who actually do just because they live differently…So, if some how natural born men were able to breastfeed we would tell them no? He still has the ability to feed his child, why not let him use the one part of his naturally born body that he’s comfortable with?

Today during a staff meeting, an interesting topic was brought up—words and the feminist movement.

One woman informed us that at one point, every tropical storm and hurricane was named after a woman since the storms “reflected a woman’s nature.” Obviously, the naming process has changed since then to name storms after both genders, but there are still examples of sexist wording today.

Many may know that the condition of “hysteria” used to be thought of as a disease caused by the uterus that made women “hysterical.” Today, we know that hysteria was just an umbrella term used to describe nearly any “problem” or emotional “outburst” a woman experienced.

Yet, when we get our appendix or spleen removed, it is called an appendectomy and a splenectomy, respectively. While today, when a woman has her uterus removed, it is called a hysterectomy. I’m sure everyone automatically caught the root word now that the parallel has been drawn, but before this meeting, I never really thought about it. Why is this procedure still called a hysterectomy despite the fact we now know the uterus does not cause hysteria?

Some words just need to be changed, especially ones that are sexist and medically incorrect.

This article talks about something we don’t often hear about. A man was actually raped to death by his 6 wives. People often don’t think of men as being the victims of rape, or forget that marriage is not an open invitation to sex whenever you want it. Spousal rape exists. Men can be victims of sexual violence too…No one should ever have to be a victim, period.

They say 1 in 4 women will be the victim of rape in their lifetime. But, did you know that 1 out of every 10 men in prison is raped? In general, 91% of women are the victims, and men make up the other 9%. This 9% still matters. Both of these numbers only reflect the reported incidents, so as terrifying as it may be, the true numbers would be even higher.

Rape is not just a women’s issue, though they are the most frequent victims. Men, obviously not just in prison, are also raped. Many young boys are also survivors of sexual assault. While men make up nearly all of the perpetrators of sexual violence, we cannot forget that their are still instances in which women take advantage of a man or boy.

Male victims are made to feel more embarrassed, and almost feminized because of what has happened to them. Men fear the label of “victim,” because it connotes weakness that does not coincide with the typical definition of masculinity.

Rape victims are not weak. In fact, they are stronger than most of us who will never have to endure such pain and mental anguish. Why would anyone make and victim feel any worse than they must already feel? There should be no stigma against men who have been sexually assaulted. Both women and men face the risk of victim blaming, and it is not right at all. Sometimes, people are more understanding with women because they see them as the “weaker” sex, and when a man is raped they question why he didn’t fight back.

A victim is a victim, despite their sex. No victim should be blamed, or be made to feel that a crime against them will change how others see them.

I received the following comment on a poem of mine…”Yeah no totally brilliant. I flipped back through a few and i must admit. You’re pretty smart (for a girl in a wedding dress)”

What does this even mean?

I have a degree in English Literature, and minored in Women’s Studies. Yes, I am 23 and married…So, because I am married I must lack a brain and ambition? Certainly, because I have a wedding photo as opposed to something trying to portray myself as an edgy writer, means I shouldn’t be taken seriously until I prove myself.

This comment was left by a woman, which adds to the sting. I really don’t see the logic. Also, I don’t like the condescension of the word “girl.” If you enjoy my writing, that is awesome, but don’t give me a backhanded compliment.

I really don’t know what else to say about this…What do you get from this (ever had a similar comment)?

it literally blows my mind that the group of white, seemingly upper middle class teens behind me laughed at the rape and torture scenes. I don’t get what’s funny about very real rape and torture.

While “Savages” wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece, I would say it was a very good movie and got its point across. The drug war in Mexico is making its way into the United States due to marijuanas current legal status. Now, I am not using this blog to state whether my opinion on the matter (okay, I think it should be legalized and regulated because of the violence caused over it), but my main concern was that the teens found these scenes funny.

My gut tells me, ‘Oh, I’d like to see how you’d react in this situation,’ but I would not wish what I saw in this movie to happen to anyone, which brings me to my point. It’s happening.

I recently went to Texas (4 miles from the border to be exact) to act as a caseworker for a day and spent the rest of my week rebuilding a home nearly destroyed by a hurricane. I had the opportunity to speak with many of the immigrants and a reformed member of the Mexican drug cartel. So yes, uneducated people sitting behind me, these things are actually happening in parts of Mexico.

There are many reasons we only see about 25% of what’s happening that I am not going to get into (perhaps in another rant I will though). The immigrants I spoke to said they even fled to the United States to escape the drug wars currently going on. One woman said that she and her family would say prayers before leaving to even go to the grocery store in fears of being killed. She said that the drug cartel didn’t care who they killed in the crossfire so fleeing to the United States was her only choice—a life of poverty was better than a life in constant danger. She even told me she was embarrassed of her country and still prays that things will get better for her family still in Mexico.

So yes, laughing teens behind me, the rape crimes, torture, and murder over drugs is actually occurring in parts of Mexico and is starting to make its way into the United States—and I do not see why you were laughing. I don’t care if you are of age to see an R rated movie; if you are going to laugh at scenes like this, that are some people’s realities, don’t bother going to the movie.

Can we please just agree to first of all not watch any Tosh.0 now? His jokes have always bothered me and I don’t understand how he’s had so many seasons. Why is it okay for a white male to make in fun of minorities, the LGBTQ community, rape, and women?

This has just taken it to a whole new level though. I always wondered how Daniel Tosh acted when he wasn’t being a “comedian”, but now I don’t even want to give him that benefit of my doubt. Any “celebrity” who would do this onstage as a part of an “act” is just sick and tasteless. Even if the initial “heckling” (I wouldn’t even call it “heckling” because it was just honesty) hurt him, if his immediate defense mechanism is to threaten rape then he does have serious psychological problems that need addressed. How does this guy still have fans?

I would love to see more come of this.
